According to the United Nations classification the Least Developed Countries (LDC) are the group of 46 developing countries that account for the highest levels of economic vulnerability with the lowest rates of human development and digital inclusion. With more than 1 billion citizens living with an average income per capita of less than $3 per day, these represent the most vulnerable populations in the world, being also the most excluded and deprived from opportunities in an increasingly digitized global economy. Only 41% of the population in LDC has access to 4G broadband, with less than 20% using the internet and only 10% of those using any type of e-commerce or e-government service.

Despite the socio-economical challenges and the prevalent digital divide, LDCs Least Developed Countries (LDCs) possess a unique human capital advantage, with more than 50% of the population under the age of 21 and growing nearly twice as fast as the rest of the developing world and accounting for almost 40% of the global population growth in the next 40 years.

This massive youth human-capital, when combined with adequate investment in education, health, skills and digital development, can allow LDC’s to empower their youth to a more even participation in the global digital economy, presenting a unique opportunity for LDCs to leapfrog traditional economic models; develop innovative business models that can transform their economies, and create a brighter future for their people.

By bringing together diverse stakeholders this session aims to foster partnerships and collaborations among governments, international organizations, development banks and private sector entities. These partnerships will encourage joint efforts in leveraging digital technologies to promote inclusive and sustainable development, especially in vulnerable countries.

Interactive and disruptive debate in the framework of SDG 5 on how gender equality can accelerate, alongside with digital, the journey of effective and transversal sustainability (people, planet, and profit).

Starting with a presentation of the current snapshot of the gender gap in strategic areas of knowledge and industry and followed by a discussion between four C-level executives, we aim to have a significant debate on perceptions, and concrete actions to accelerate sustainability alongside with gender equality.

Through the event app, we will invite the audience to suggest and vote for real actions to implement to reduce gender inequality.

At the end of the session, the live voting results will be disclosed for all and will be considered for further elaboration of a roadmap of actions for effective implementation of SDG 5 in the sustainability strategy of the companies participating at the Summit.

Collaboration with companies is often a sensitive issue for schools, but in the digital world it is an absolute necessity for delivering on the promise of SDG4 and the basic child right to the education that is best for each and every child. Digital tools are crucial for this, but choosing the right ones needs a collaborative approach between the providers of tools and schools. The Council of Europe has adopted Guidelines to support equitable partnerships of education institutions and the private sector in 2021. They were prepared by a unique expert team coming from policy making, the school sector and the private sector, and they were finalised after a few years’ of discussions. The school closures of the past few years and the more extensive use of digital technology has made the topic more relevant. Although there is a consensus that school education should not go digital again, there is also an agreement that digital technology supporting schooling should remain. This needs an approach that considers a plethora of child rights, not only the right to the right education. In this parallel session, we will explore the ethical and practical aspects of digitalisation in schooling and education in a broader sense, considering all relevant child rights In Europe and in the USA this is even more topical as GDPR and COPPA are not aligned with child rights – a clash of legislation in Europe and a highlight of the problems around child rights in the USA, the only country that has not ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. We are going to also present and discuss the outcomes of the SAILS project that offers tools for school leaders, teachers and parents to provide for the above.

Although ESG reporting tools exist, and some biodiversity-assessment aids are available, there exists no tool that provides comprehensive support to the localisation, assessment, evaluation, and preparation for the managing of natural capital.

VALU-ES is a web-based application and supported methodology that allows even multinational corporates to organise its natural capital information in a secure, compliant, and adaptive manner. The application provides layered access to different client users, who are then supported in the characterisation of natural assets (TRANSPARENT-compliant), materiality analysis, and crucially the associated ecosystem services (CICES-compliant). On that basis, the app realises a valuation, provides metrics, and benchmarks them, driving attention to outstanding elements.

GeSI has been calling for digital transformation ever since its founding, but recent findings from the IPCC have given new urgency to finding alternative solutions to “business as usual” when it comes to climate policies and strategies. This panel will look at both ends of the climate innovation pipeline, featuring Dr. Joaquin Ruiz, director of Biosphere 2, which conducts the world’s largest controlled environmental experiments and two of the world’s leading experts in their respective fields: Nizar Kammourie, CEO of SAWACO, the leading private desalination company in Saudi Arabia and Christer Otterstrom, the pioneering CEO of Hummeltorp, who is reinventing everything you ever thought you knew about gravel pits and construction and debris recycling. Also featuring GeSI CEO Luis Neves and Stephen Jordan, the CEO of the Institute for Sustainable Development, this conversation will provide inspirational case studies of what can be done, dissect current challenges and obstacles to overcoming “business as usual” inertia, and identify pathways forward for putting action-oriented R&D, innovation, and digital transformation at the heart of global climate policy.

A presentation that encompasses two consultative services with a focus on sustainability.

The first one is our DIF initiative. DIF is a program that aims to help organizations accelerate digital innovation and create a culture of agility, involving business and technology teams in the innovation process. The Program’s sessions can have different focus themes, one of them being sustainability.

When the focus is on sustainability, the objective is to challenge teams to find creative digital AI solutions that have the potential to create a positive impact within the scope of their organizations or customer operations. These factory sessions can be hosted for or implemented in organizations from all sectors, with teams that join members from areas such as, IT, Sustainability, Innovation, and more. They start with an innovation workshop and move on to an ideation and prototype definition process. Once prototypes have been designed, teams present their solutions and are evaluated against categories that contribute to sustainable development, like reduction of carbon emissions, circular economy, optimization of supply chain operations.

On the other hand, there is our People, Sustainability and Digital Impact Challenge, for our whole organization. The objective of the challenge was to foster innovation, drive offerings with a positive impact on people and the planet, and accelerate our contribution to the UN’s 17 SDGs.

Teams brainstormed ideas to create new solutions, or presented solutions already created or implemented by their areas, according to guidelines designed specifically for the challenge. The process allowed them to reflect and discover new angles about potential ideas, and, as a result, promote their great impact next to customers.

Teams were given 2 months to team up, ideate and submit their applications, which were then evaluated by an internal jury. The winning solution was the one with greater impact on the UN’s 17 SDGs.

Combustion engines will be operating for a long period yet, especially in heavy transport (Truck & Bus). For vehicles consuming more than 20 liters per 100 kms, a reduction in just one or two liters per 100 kms means a great reduction in emissions since they are intensively used and typically run more than 500kms per day. Such reduction can be simply obtained by efficient driving.

PREDRI aims at reducing the fuel consumption, reduce engine failures and optimize maintenance. Vehicles are remotely monitored using a telemetry system obtaining vehicle parameters (engine temperature, pressure, rpms, braking events, GPS location...). Aggregating data from traffic and weather, an algorithm is able to determine the optimal working regime for the vehicle compromising efficiency and timing. The in-vehicle device provides a driving advice to the driver. Further data analysis may anticipate failures, avoiding severe and costly reparations which in turn reduces parts usage and thus emissions due to manufacturing. In the same line, regular maintenance periodization is adapted according to the working conditions for each vehicle, optimizing the use of regular parts replaced: oils, brake pads, batteries, filters... thus reducing emissions by not using unnecessary products.

The system is currently tested and under development for one year in a bus fleet (c.a. 100 vehicles). On average, 900 litres saved per day, 2600 kg of CO2 saved per day (average of 2.50kg per diesel/gas litre); 300 running days per year results in 780 CO2 Tonnes saved. Concerning CO2 reductions due to less use of parts and maintenance products, estimation is not accurate yet, but a reduction in severe failures has been already detected, together with an extension of maintenance periodization of 2000kms (on average). Finally, another CO2 reduction comes with the life extension of the vehicle since the replacement period is longer due to better engine care.

Digital health devices are used increasingly in the health sector bringing benefits to patients a.o. by empowering them to take care of their health, enabling more personalized care, and through early detection. Similarly, the use of wearable devices in remote clinical trials may help to diversify the clinical trial population and therefore reduce possible risks of bias. These digital health devices contain valuable raw materials that are essential to the European economy. Currently many of these devices end up in landfill or are incinerated, meaning these raw materials are lost. The Digital Health in Circular Economy (DICE) is a European project funded under Horizon Europe aiming to develop and demonstrate circular and environmentally sound solutions for designing, collecting, reusing, refurbishing, remanufacturing, and recycling digital health devices. The project is implemented in five healthcare ecosystems across Europe, with community-engaged pilots in Norway, Belgium, Slovenia, Spain, and Germany. The goal is to mitigate the global health e-waste problem, alleviate the shortage of critical raw materials, and protect the health and safety of those involved in the circular economy.

The project aims to extend the lifetime of digital healthcare devices by developing and piloting solutions across the entire product life-cycle. The project will highlight major outcomes achieved in the first year and explore how these results can be uptaken within the healthcare sector and leveraged towards adjacent sectors. Addressing sustainability from a holistic perspective in the digital agenda is crucial for patients, health-care centers, policy makers and producers for increasing positive impacts and reducing the overall footprint.

The aim of this session is to introduce the DICE project and efforts to reduce the current digital health footprint and increase positive impacts as well as to engage participants in the discussion towards a circular transition.

For a fairer and more competitive cloud ecosystem in Portugal:

351 Community – Portuguese Startup Association and ESOP – Portuguese Open-Source Software Companies Association lead the NUVEM Initiative in Portugal. This initiative was originally launched in Spain (“Nubes”) and more recently in Portugal, together counting on the collaboration and support of more than sixty companies representing the technology sector in the Iberian Peninsula.

It consists of a movement to build a fairer and more competitive cloud ecosystem in Portugal, which aims to appeal to the need of overcoming the obstacles that this ecosystem still faces. By promoting a discussion open to all stakeholders and decision-makers about improving the cloud ecosystem, the aim of the NUVEM Initiative is for the cloud to be part of a fair, competitive, transparent, secure, and sustainable environment, helping to place our country at the forefront of this technology.
